A Trip Down Memory Lane
As we approach The Moonrise’s big 1-0, we can’t help but reflect on our hotel’s inception — and go back even further to the development of our neighborhood, the famous Delmar Loop.
The Magnificent Moonrise
In April 2009, Joe Edwards — creator of unique Loop attractions like Blueberry Hill, The Pageant, and the non-profit St. Louis Walk of Fame — opened up The Moonrise as part of his vision for restoring vibrancy to the Delmar Loop. In the spirit of maintaining the Loop’s natural character, the historical facade of a building that once stood in The Moonrise’s place was preserved in the new construction.
Topped with the world’s largest man-made moon, the 8-story Moonrise Hotel has been a can’t-miss destination for both locals and out-of-towners alike over the past decade. We’ve loved participating in annual Delmar Loop events like the Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade or the Loop Ice Carnival, and throwing our own parties like Queens In Space (our annual drag show fundraiser on the rooftop to benefit the LGBTQ community). Of course, coddling the hundreds of V.I.Pooches and Celebri-kitties that have come to stay at our pet-friendly hotel through the years has only added to the fun.
With 125 unique boutique hotel rooms, the delicious Eclipse Restaurant, our popular unique event spaces, and our beloved rooftop terrace bar, our hotel keeps getting better every year.
The Lively Loop
This exciting restaurant, shopping, and arts & entertainment district was designated “One of the 10 Great Streets in America” by the American Planning Association. Immerse yourself in the rich social, ethnic, and cultural diversity of this historic district. (Fun fact: The “Loop” refers to the name of the streetcar turnaround for the Delmar Loop Trolley.)
The first buildings were constructed in the early 1900s and The Loop became a top destination in St. Louis. By the 1930s and ’40s, it became known as the place to go for high-end shopping. After World War II, prosperity came to America and malls were built in the suburbs, causing many city streets around the country to decline.
Joe Edwards envisioned a rebirth of The Loop and opened his highly successful Blueberry Hill restaurant and music club here in 1972. He began to work with local government to transform the neighborhood. After changing zoning laws, adding dusk-to-dawn lighting, widening the sidewalks and narrowing the street, the businesses (and people) began pouring back in!
The Loop is considered “One of the Coolest Streets in America” as featured in Show Me Missouri Magazine. Exciting new developments are underway, and the recently-opened historic, fixed-track Loop Trolley hails back to a simpler era as well as an environmentally sound future. The Trolley connects The Loop to Forest Park, the #1 city park in the United States, which includes the St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum, Science Center, the Muny Theatre and more!
We wouldn’t be who we are without The Loop. Along with its unique galleries, shops, boutiques, delicious restaurants, St. Louis Walk of Fame (founded in 1988), and fun attractions, we’re part of a lively district that just keeps getting better.
